Now...

You'll be the same person 10 years from now,
except for the books you read and the people you meet.
~Charlie "Tremendous" Jones

I was thinking about where I've come over the last five years.
It is a mile stone after all -- five years out of high school this spring.

While sweating and laboring (literally) over a class project this last week, my professor, Dr. B, with a grin, asked me if I'd ever thought I'd be doing something like this for school.

"I never thought I'd be going to school in Kentucky," I replied, gritting my teeth as I stepped hard on a shovel, penetrating the hard clay and gravel with a satisfactory thud.

Then he wanted to know how I came to Asbury. It was one of those "pause" moments. One where something hits you and your pace is disrupted and stops you - like a power-walker who gets bumped off her treadmill.

Pausing from work, I leaned on the handle of my flat-edge shovel and looked over the senior and boarder field, where my horse Diamond was calmly grazing with his buddy Foreigner. The green hills beyond, sunlit, looked so picturesque.

"God brought me here."

I stepped back on that shovel. Dug in and shoved it under the chunk of clay and then heaved it into a wheel barrow.

Five years ago I wasn't ready to head out. I knew I wanted to do something with horses and writing. I didn't exactly know what or where. When I found out that Asbury, a Christian University, was offering a equine journalism program (only starting last fall), I was ready. I said, "Okay God - it looks like you prepared it for me."

So I came.

And here I'm.

Where will I be in 2016? Who will I have met? Where will I have gone? What books will I have read?

I love my Mom

I was talking to my mom earlier today.
I'm usually the one telling her exactly, and I mean exactly, how long it is until whatever it might be.
Weeks, days, hours, minutes...
I said something about me having only two and half or so weeks to go.
Her response was "three weeks."
Well, that made me realize - *shock* - I didn't know exactly how much further I had to go.
Its not 2 1/2 nor is it 3.
It is two weeks and five days and 17 hours until I have to leave the dorm.
May 6th (Friday) 2011.

Then just 32 more credit hours to go!

...just a joke I found funny...

A blonde was trying to sell her old car but was having a lot of problems because the car had 250,000 miles on it. One day she told her problem to a brunette that she worked with. The brunette told her: "There is a possibility to make the car easier to sell, but it's not legal."

"That doesn't matter,” replied the blonde, "if I only can sell the car."

"Okay,” said the brunette. "Here is the address of a friend of mine. He owns a car repair shop. Tell him I sent you and he will turn the counter in your car back to 50,000 miles. Then it should not be a problem to sell your car anymore." The following weekend, the blonde made the trip to the mechanic. About one month after that, the brunette asked the blonde: "Did you sell your car?"

"No,” replied the blonde, "why should I? It only has 50,000 miles on it."

Acts 19:19

(19)A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. (20) In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

I was catching up on my extra credit Bible reading for New Testament class earlier today. This passage stuck out to me when I read the footnote. It said that a drachmas was worth a day's wages. The thought struck me me - what would this burn pile be worth in today's money?
At minimum wage of $7.25 a hour with an 8 hour working day, a day's wage would be $58.
50,000 days wages would equal $2,900,000.

(19)A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. A $3million dollar burn pile. (20) In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

And this is at minimum wage!
