Acts 19:19

(19)A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. (20) In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

I was catching up on my extra credit Bible reading for New Testament class earlier today. This passage stuck out to me when I read the footnote. It said that a drachmas was worth a day's wages. The thought struck me me - what would this burn pile be worth in today's money?
At minimum wage of $7.25 a hour with an 8 hour working day, a day's wage would be $58.
50,000 days wages would equal $2,900,000.

(19)A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. A $3million dollar burn pile. (20) In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

And this is at minimum wage!
